The fastest way to get bored of a new laser engraver is to keep engraving the same scrap of plywood. The fastest way to fall in love with one is to discover how many materials it actually handles. Below are 12 materials, what they look like under a diode laser, project ideas you can start this weekend, and rough starting settings. Always run a small test square first — every wood species, every leather hide, every batch of paper behaves slightly differently.
About power numbers. “Power %” below assumes a typical 5 W optical-output diode laser. If yours is stronger or weaker, scale accordingly. Speeds are mm/min in LightBurn / LaserGRBL.
1. Solid wood (basswood, birch, maple, walnut)
The classic and the workhorse. Diode lasers love wood — the blue-violet diode wavelength absorbs cleanly into the grain. Lighter woods give you crisp tonal control; darker woods (walnut, cherry) give a quieter, warmer mark.Project idea: wedding favors, custom cutting board accents, gift tags, name plaques.
Starting settings: 100% power, 4000 mm/min for engraving line art; drop to 80% / 2500 mm/min for raster fills.

2. Leather (vegetable-tanned)
Veg-tan leather darkens predictably under a diode laser. The result is a permanent, slightly recessed mark with no harsh char. Chrome-tanned leather is workable but the chemistry is less consistent — stick with veg-tan if you can.Project idea: wallets, AirTag holders, key fobs, journal covers, bracelet patches.
Starting settings: 30–40% power, 3000 mm/min. Multiple light passes beat one heavy pass.

3. Kraft paper and cardstock
Underrated. A diode laser produces a soft burn that prints can’t match — it’s effectively letterpress without the press. Great for high-end packaging, business cards, invitations.Project idea: brand tags for an Etsy shop, save-the-date cards, branded gift boxes.
Starting settings: 15% power, 5000 mm/min. Lower is better — paper goes from “nice mark” to “house fire” quickly.

4. Denim and natural-fiber fabric
Denim engraves into a soft fade reminiscent of acid wash. The cotton fibers vaporize a few microns deep, leaving the indigo dye lighter where the laser hits. Synthetic blends are unpredictable — go full cotton, full hemp, or canvas.Project idea: custom tote bags, jacket back patches, jean pockets.
Starting settings: 40% power, 3500 mm/min. Test on the seam-allowance offcuts first.
5. 3D-printed PLA / PETG
Lasers and 3D printers are best friends. Use a diode laser to label, decorate, or add functional graphics to parts you’ve printed yourself. PLA is the safer choice; PETG works but watch ventilation. Avoid ABS unless your fume extraction is solid — the styrene byproducts aren’t fun.Project idea: labeled cable organizers, name plates for desk parts, branded keycap blanks.
Starting settings: 35% power, 3000 mm/min. Wipe the part with isopropyl first; surface oils cause uneven engraving.
6. Slate and stone coasters

7. Phone cases (matte plastic)

8. Cork (placemats, wine corks, coasters)

9. Anodized aluminum
Yes, you can engrave aluminum with a diode laser — but only if it’s anodized, and only black or dark anodizing works well. The laser ablates the dyed oxide layer, exposing bright metal underneath. 10. Bamboo and bamboo-blend products

Always run a 5 mm × 5 mm test square on a scrap of the actual material first. Settings drift between batches — even within the same supplier, a new shipment of basswood may need 10-15% adjustment.
What a diode laser can’t do
The honest list of materials a diode laser doesn’t handle well or at all:
- Bare metal (raw stainless, untreated aluminum, copper, brass). The 450 nm wavelength reflects rather than absorbs. Workaround: marking spray (CerMark) bonds chemically when lasered. See our engraving metal with a diode laser guide.
- Clear acrylic. The wavelength passes through transparent material. CO2 lasers (10,600 nm) handle acrylic; diodes don’t. Detail in can you engrave acrylic with a diode laser.
- Thick MDF (over 3 mm). Some thinner laser-grade MDF works, but the binders are toxic when burned — even thin MDF needs aggressive ventilation. Skip if you have alternatives.
- Glass without masking. Diode lasers can engrave glass through painter’s tape masking, but the results are at the edge of acceptable. CO2 is the right tool.
- Production volumes above ~200 items/day. A 5 W diode runs at consistent throughput, but eventually the work area and material handling become the bottleneck. Move to a 25-30 cm shoebox laser.
Materials that are dangerous to engrave (never)
Some materials release toxic compounds when lasered. The general principle — covered in detail under laser safety guidelines — is that any halogenated, chlorinated, or fluorinated polymer should be avoided. Never engrave these:
- PVC, vinyl, faux leather — chlorine compounds (hydrochloric acid in the air)
- Polystyrene foam — toxic fumes, can flare into flame
- Polycarbonate (Lexan) — releases benzene
- Pressure-treated lumber — arsenic and chromium leach
- Galvanized steel — zinc fumes are toxic
- Anything with lead, beryllium, or mercury — cumulative toxicity
- Material you can’t identify — when in doubt, don’t
A 5 W diode is for personalization, gifting, prototyping, and small-batch production. Once you outgrow that, you’ll know — and the X1 will become the desktop unit you keep around for the small jobs.
