AnyLaser X1 Review: 4 Months of Real-World Engraving

Hands-on review of the AnyLaser X1 after four months of daily use. Engraving quality, software, materials, and what we'd change.

Four months and dozens of projects later — this is the AnyLaser X1 in real-world use.

The AnyLaser X1 has been on our desk since early 2026. We’ve burned through dozens of project sessions on it — custom guitar picks, leather wallets, 3D-printed cable organizers, kraft paper packaging tags for a friend’s soap business. This is what four months of normal, mixed use has taught us about it.

Short version: it does exactly what it claims and very little more, which is a much rarer compliment than it sounds. Read on for the long version.

The first impression

The X1 ships in a box smaller than most ring lights. Inside, the engraver itself is roughly the size of a coffee mug — about 430 g, footprint barely larger than a paperback. Out of the box: the engraver, a USB-C cable, protective glasses, focus tool, and a quick start card. No driver CD. No proprietary power brick. The setup instructions fit on one side of a postcard.

Plugging into a 65 W laptop USB-C charger (the same one we use for the MacBook) brings it to life. macOS and Windows both recognize the X1 as a generic GRBL device — no driver install, no kernel extension, no signed-driver dance. That alone earns it points.

What’s worth noting in this list: every spec is honest. The “optical output 5 W” line in particular — diode laser wattage is famously inflated in this market (a “20 W” listing usually has 1.5-2 W of real optical output). The X1’s stated 5 W matches what we measured with a power meter at the head.

Software: just LightBurn and go

AnyLaser is GRBL-compatible, which in 2026 is the right answer. LightBurn, LaserGRBL, OpenBuilds CONTROL — they all see the X1 as a standard machine and let you skip the proprietary onboarding entirely. We use LightBurn primarily; it picks up the X1 the first time we hit “Devices → Find My Laser”.

Files we threw at it without conversion: JPG, PNG, BMP, SVG, PDF, GCODE. Vector imports clean up nicely; raster engraving on photos benefits from the usual dither + line interval tuning. None of this is X1-specific — it’s standard LightBurn — and that’s the point.

Engraving quality on real materials

A lot of laser engraver reviews show test patterns on flat MDF and call it a day. We used the X1 the way we’d actually use it.

Wood (basswood, birch ply, walnut offcuts)

Crisp. Clean. The blue-violet diode is in its element here. We engrave wedding favors and small gift tags routinely; at lower power and higher speed you get a soft tan, at higher power a deep umber. Char is minimal even without air assist as long as you keep speed reasonable.

Leather

Veg-tan leather darkens beautifully and predictably. We’ve made wallets, AirTag holders, and key fobs. The smell is less acrid than expected because the diode is darkening the leather rather than burning through it. Still ventilate.

Kraft paper and cardstock

This is where the X1 quietly impressed us. Engraving cardstock at low power produces a subtle relief that prints can’t match — perfect for high-end packaging tags and stationery. Our use case here was for a friend’s small soap business and the result was the kind of detail that would normally require letterpress equipment.

3D-printed parts

Engraving labels onto PLA prints works well at low power. We’ve started using it to label our own cable organizers and toolbox dividers. For ABS, ventilate — diode lasers and ABS produce styrene fumes you don’t want to breathe.

Where it struggles

Bare metal: forget it. Even with a marking spray, the X1 isn’t designed for that. Light-colored acrylic: also a no — diode lasers don’t see clear acrylic, you need CO2 for that. Anodized aluminum: yes, with patience. Glass: only with masking and at the edge of what we’d recommend.

None of this is news for diode lasers in general. The X1 is honest about its physics.

How fast does it actually engrave?

Real-world timings, measured on our X1 over months of mixed use:

Three things to note in those numbers:

  • Setup is the variable. The engraving itself is consistent; the per-piece time changes mostly with how fast you swap material. A practiced batch run on gift tags hits ~60 pieces per hour.
  • Raster vs line is the biggest dial. Line engraving is roughly 4× faster than raster fill for the same visual area. For text and logos, always line.
  • Speed scales with the diode’s optical output. A 10 W diode would halve these times — but in our experience, runtime hasn’t been the bottleneck. Material handling has.

For an Etsy production estimate (because we get this question a lot), expect 30-60 finished items per hour of focused work, depending on the product. Wedding favor batches hit the high end; tumblers the low end.

The intentional compromises

Two design choices deserve their own paragraph because they’re worth understanding.

First, the work area is small. By design. The engraver is meant to live on a desk and engrave palm-sized objects beautifully, not to compete with a 30 cm shoebox laser. After four months we don’t miss the larger area nearly as often as we expected — most projects are smaller than a postcard.

Second, focus is manual. There’s a small focus block that you place on the workpiece, lower the head to it, and you’re set. It adds about 8 seconds to a session. In exchange, the X1 is half the weight and half the height of an auto-focus competitor. We made peace with that on day three.

Safety, compliance, and the boring-but-important stuff

The X1 ships with FDA, FCC, and CE markings. The lid stays closed during operation; safety glasses are included and you should wear them anyway when working with reflections. There’s a built-in fan that pulls smoke and debris away from the workpiece — not a substitute for a real fume extractor for heavy production runs, but enough for occasional projects.

How it compares to competitors

vs Glowforge Aura

The Aura is bigger (work area, weight) and has auto-focus, but it locks you into the Glowforge cloud software and costs roughly 8-12× the X1. A 25 cm shoebox unit beats the X1 on work area and air assist. It loses on weight (5-8×), price (3-4×), and on whether it can disappear into a cupboard between uses. Most hobbyists don’t need the bigger work area; if you’re doing 200+ items per day, you might.

vs handheld pen lasers

Pen lasers engrave curved objects (mugs, antlers, rocks) but lack a motion bed for consistency. The X1 does what they can’t (consistent flat-bed engraving) but not what they can (curved surfaces). Complementary, not substitutes.

Things we’d change

After four months, our shortlist of nitpicks:

  • USB-C cable length. The included cable is fine, but a 2 m cable in the box would be friendlier for desk routing.
  • Status LED. A single subtle indicator for “ready / running / done” would save a glance at the laptop.
  • Wireless connection. The team has hinted this is on a stretch goal — fingers crossed.

Crucially, none of these are deal breakers. They’re the kind of polish you ask for after the basics are right.

Who it’s for

Buy the AnyLaser X1 if you’re starting laser engraving as a hobby, you’re running a small Etsy or Instagram-shop side hustle, or you’re a maker who wants laser capability without dedicating a corner of the apartment to it.

Skip it if you need to engrave bare metal, work routinely on parts larger than 100 mm × 100 mm, or you’re setting up a production line where uptime and bed size matter more than portability.

Verdict

Four months in, the X1 still earns its desk space — and it earns it back daily. It’s the engraver we recommend when someone says “I think I want to start engraving but I don’t want to commit a whole table to it.” The combination of USB-C power, GRBL software freedom, and FDA/FCC/CE compliance at 430 g is genuinely unique in 2026.
