Wood is the perfect first material for laser engraving — affordable, forgiving, and the diode laser wavelength absorbs into it cleanly. But “wood” covers thousands of species, each with different density, grain, and color. Picking the right one is the difference between a magazine-perfect engraving and a faded smudge. This guide ranks the species we actually use day-to-day on a 5 W diode laser like the AnyLaser X1, with starting settings for each.

What makes a wood good for laser engraving?

Three things matter:

  • Color contrast. Light woods give the highest contrast because the laser-darkened mark stands out sharply against the pale background. Dark woods give muted, sophisticated results — beautiful, but lower contrast.
  • Grain consistency. Open-grain woods (oak, ash) cause the laser to engrave deeper into the soft spring-wood than the hard summer-wood, creating an uneven texture. Closed-grain woods (basswood, maple) give uniform engraving.
  • Density. Soft, low-density woods engrave faster but burn more easily. Hard, high-density woods need more power but resist over-burning. Mid-density is the sweet spot for hobbyists.

The best species

Basswood — the all-rounder

If you only ever engrave one wood, make it basswood. It’s a soft, pale, closed-grain hardwood that engraves beautifully at almost any setting, holds tiny details, and is sold in every craft store as 3 mm sheets, gift tags, and pre-cut shapes. Beginner friendly to the point of being foolproof.

Starting settings: 100% power, 4000 mm/min line / 80% power, 2500 mm/min raster.

Birch plywood — the project workhorse

Birch ply is the format of choice for larger projects. Pick the laser-grade stuff (sometimes labeled “craft plywood”) rather than construction-grade. The glue layer is consistent, the surface is light, and contrast is excellent. Three- and five-millimeter sheets are most common.

Starting settings: 100% power, 4500 mm/min line / 90% power, 2800 mm/min raster.

Bamboo — the gift-grade option

Technically a grass, but laser engravers treat it as a wood. Bamboo cutting boards, kitchen utensils, phone stands, and tea trays all engrave brilliantly. Good runners-up

Maple — the quiet luxury

Closed-grain hardwood with a pale, slightly warmer tone than basswood. Engravings come out clean and the finished piece feels more upscale. Maple costs more than basswood and needs slightly higher power, but it’s a great choice for serious gifts.

Walnut — the dark dignity

The opposite of basswood: dark, dense, and dignified. Walnut produces a low-contrast engraving — the laser mark is darker, but against an already-dark background it reads as a subtle relief rather than a bold mark. Excellent for executive gifts, watch boxes, premium products.

Starting settings: 100% power, 3000 mm/min, optionally 2 passes for visible depth.

Cherry — the warm middle ground

Mid-density, mid-color hardwood with a beautiful natural finish. Cherry darkens with age, so engravings deepen in contrast over time. A favorite for heirloom-style projects.

Beech — the budget alternative

Dense, pale European hardwood. Cheaper than maple, slightly tighter grain than basswood, takes engraving well. Common on European craft store shelves; less common in the US.

What to avoid

  • Treated lumber. Pressure-treated wood (the green outdoor decking stuff) releases arsenic and chromium compounds when burned. Never engrave it. Ever.
  • MDF over 3 mm. Medium-density fiberboard uses binders that release formaldehyde and other compounds when lasered. Thin MDF (1-3 mm) labeled “laser MDF” is okay; thicker is a no.
  • Construction plywood (non-laser-grade). The glue between veneer layers is inconsistent and often toxic. Stick to laser-grade or premium birch ply.
  • Reclaimed wood of unknown origin. That gorgeous old barn beam might have been treated with creosote in 1962. If you don’t know the wood’s history, don’t engrave it.
  • Painted or stained wood. Some paints release toxic fumes; some stains contain compounds you don’t want vaporized. Engrave the bare wood, then stain or paint after.
  • Pine (open-grain). Pine is fine in principle, but the open grain creates uneven engravings — soft spring-wood burns deep, hard summer-wood barely marks. Use it only when you want a rustic look.
  • Oak (open-grain). Same issue as pine, more pronounced. Beautiful for rustic pieces, frustrating for clean type or fine details.

Always run a test square first. Even within the same species, batch-to-batch variation in moisture content, finish, and density can shift settings by 10-20%.

Finishing engraved wood

A great engraving deserves a finish that protects it. Three approaches we use depending on the project:

Light wax (most projects)

Beeswax-based natural wax. Apply a thin coat with a soft cloth, buff after 5 minutes. Brings out the contrast of the engraving slightly, seals against dust collection, doesn’t yellow over time. Perfect for gift tags, wedding favors, and indoor pieces.

Polyurethane varnish (outdoor / heavy-use)

For outdoor signs, kitchen items, or anything that’ll see water, brush on a thin coat of polyurethane or polycrylic varnish. Two coats with light sanding between for a durable finish. The downside: it adds a slight gloss that some people find less authentic.

Mineral oil (cutting boards, kitchen)

Food-safe mineral oil is the right finish for cutting boards. Rub in, let absorb 30 minutes, wipe excess. Re-apply quarterly. It darkens the engraving slightly and gives a hand-rubbed warmth.

What to avoid

  • Stains over engraving. They bleed into the engraved channels and reduce contrast.
  • Heavy lacquer or shellac. Visually wrong for hand-engraved pieces.
  • Spray finishes without ventilation. Aerosolized finishes are toxic to breathe and the spray pattern is less even than brushed.

Where to source good engraving wood

The supply chain for engraving-grade wood looks different from general lumber:

Craft stores (small batches)

Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and equivalent EU stores stock pre-cut basswood and birch ply in standard sizes (50 × 30 mm gift tags, 80 mm round disks, etc.). Convenient but expensive per piece — fine for one-off projects.

Bulk laser suppliers (production)

Companies like Glowforge, Inventables, and Etsy “laser blanks” sellers ship pre-cut, laser-grade wood in bulk packs. Per-piece cost is half the craft store price. Sizes match common project needs (gift tags, ornaments, coasters).

Local sawmills (pieces that aren’t pre-cut)

For larger projects (cutting boards, signs) and unusual species (cherry, walnut), local sawmills are the best source. They sell offcuts cheap and often have exotic species the chains don’t carry. Bring a sketch of what you need; they’ll size it for you.

What to ask before buying

  • Is it kiln-dried? Wet wood engraves badly. Look for ≤10% moisture.
  • Is it laser-grade? “Laser-grade” means consistent thickness, no warpage, free of treated areas.
  • What’s the finish? Pre-finished wood may have UV coatings or stains that interfere with engraving.

Storage tips for engraving wood

Once you have wood on hand, storage affects engraving quality:

  • Keep humidity stable. A garage that swings between 30% and 80% humidity warps thin sheets. Indoor storage at room temperature is best.
  • Stack flat with weight on top. Prevents bowing while air dries the surfaces evenly.
  • Use within 6 months. Older wood absorbs more moisture from the air, even indoors. Engraving quality drops on stock that’s been sitting around.

A short word on reclaimed and exotic woods

Some makers love the look of reclaimed barn wood, antique pieces, or exotic species like padauk and purpleheart. A few cautions specific to engraving them:

  • Reclaimed wood with unknown history. Old barn wood may have been treated with arsenic-based preservatives in mid-century construction. If you don’t know its provenance, don’t engrave it.
  • Exotic dense hardwoods. Padauk, purpleheart, ebony engrave but require lower power and slower speeds because of density. Test extensively. Many also produce strong fragrances when lasered — ventilate aggressively.
  • Spalted woods. The fungal patterns are gorgeous but the soft spalted areas engrave deeper than the surrounding wood, creating uneven engravings. Use it for rustic-look pieces only.
